Help - Preferences - Dictionaries

You have to install some dictionaries in order to be able to look up words and phrases.
You can see the list of installed dictionaries on the Dictionaries tab in the TranslateIt! preferences.
The 1st column in the table indicates the dictionary status (links to the dictionary repository for dictionary updates, or user dictionary info).
The 2nd column allows you to turn dictionaries on or off.
The 3rd column allows you to set the format of a dictionary to ensure proper reading of its contents.
The last column indicates dictionary titles that can be changed to your liking.
Below the dictionary list, you can see the dictionary and group controls.
You can add a new dictionary, remove a dictionary from the list, and turn all or selected dictionaries on or off.
Active dictionaries and morphology are assigned to the currently selected dictionary group.
You can group dictionaries by language, or by knowledge domains.
By default, TranslateIt! includes the "Custom selection" group that cannot be removed.
Next to the dictionary group drop-down menu, you can see the dictionary update button (updates are only available for dictionaries with repository links assigned), and the help button.

Tips:

  • In addition to dictionaries (or even instead of them), you can use Online Services
  • You can install additional dictionaries. TranslateIt! supports various dictionary formats. Take a second to explore external dictionary sources at the bottom of the Dictionary Downloads page
  • The dictionary list also allows you to set dictionary priorities: The closer a dictionary is to the top of the list, the higher is its priority. You can also assign a dictionary with the top priority by Command-clicking its entry in the Dictionary window. You can use the filter button at the bottom of the Dictionary window to quickly switch between separate dictionaries or choose to show results from all dictionaries
  • You can use the built-in Text Translation tool (Command-Shift-F) to translate short texts or entire web pages (just enter a URL in the source text field and click Translate)
  • If you see no translations for a word, but you are sure that at least one of your installed dictionaries contains it, check the state of that dictionary it must be enabled in the currently selected group
  • If you see HTML tags in entries of some dictionaries, try changing their format to Plain/HT or HTML
  • Use groups to speed up your searches and improve relevance of search results. Use the TranslateIt! Dock or Status icon to quickly switch between dictionary groups.
  • TranslateIt! can download, unpack (if necessary) and install dictionaries: Try dragging a URL to the TranslateIt! window or Dock icon, or clicking special x-translateit URL's to install dictionaries with a single click
  • Press Command-I to view detailed info about the currently selected dictionary in the dictionary list
  • Explore the contextual menu - it contains many useful options
