TranslateIt! Teacher - FAQ

TranslateIt! Teacher is a perfect tool for learning foreign languages.
  • Q: Where are TranslateIt! Teacher's Libraries located?
    A: The parent folder is ~/Library/Application Support/TranslateItTeacher,
    ~ - stands for the current user's home folder (i.e, /Users/yourLogin)
  • Q: Can I edit built-in cards?
A: There is no way to edit built-in cards directly, so you'll have to make a copy of the read-only demo library first: Go to Libraries folder and double-click to the cards.db file.
  • Q: How do I create a new Library?
A: Choose File / New Library... in the menubar or press CMD-N
  • Q: How do I change Library Properties (Attributes)?
A: Choose Edit / Library Properties... in the menubar or press CMD-Shift-L
  • Q: How do I add a card to the Library?
A: Choose Edit / New Entry... in the menubar or press CMD-Shift-N
  • Q: How do I edit Library's cards?
A: Press CMD-Shift-E to edit the current word, use Words Review or the card navigator to freely go back or forward
  • Q: How do I delete a word from the Library?
A: Press CMD-Shift-D, select words you want to delete and click Delete, or press the Delete button right in the card editor
  • Q: How do I share my Library?
A: Your Library consists of two files with the same name, but different extensions (.db & .plist.) Just compress those two files and send them to your friend. Your friend could open the Library by simple Drag & Drop it to the TranslateIt! Teacher app icon (either in the Finder or in the Dock), or open it via CMD-O (File / Select Library... menu)
  • Q: Can I install additional sound files?
A: Yes. Copy them to ~/Library/Application Support/TranslateItTeacher/Sounds/langABBR, where langABBR is a commonly used abbreviation of a language (en, ru, fr, de, etc.)
The same lang abbr. must be specified in the Library's Properties
  • Q: What sound formats does TranslateIt! Teacher support?
A: WAV & MP3. If both filetypes are present, the WAV version will be preferred as the lossless version.
TranslateIt! Teacher comes with a small sound set for English and Russian (en, ru). You can extend those two sets with additional files
  • Q: What remote language sounds are available?
A: It depends on Microsoft Web service. The current list of supported languages is as follows:
ca, da, de, en, es, fi, fr, it, ja, ko, nl, no, pl, pt, ru, sv, zh-cn, zh-tw.
The same list is available in the Source and Translation Language fields of the Library Properties dialog. If no local sounds found, TranslateIt! Teacher will try to fetch them from a remote server
  • Q: How do I create sound files myself?
A: We recommend to use Audacity, and follow this short tutorial.
  • Q: Can I pack my sounds along with my library to distribute them easily?
A: Yes, just create a folder, put your .db and .plist files and your Sounds folder, and then add the .ttdb extension to the folder.
This way, you can distribute several complete libraries or just sounds as TranslateIt! Teacher add-ons
  • Q: Where do I get images?
A: We recommend using free cliparts or image search engines like Google.
Just click the search button in the Card Editor, or press CMD-F.
Tip: If you need to look up an image for a word's translation instead the word itself, fill in the translation field first (leave the source word field empty), and press CMD-F
  • Q: Where do I find my words' transcriptions?
A: The Transcription field is optional, you can safely leave it empty. You could google for online transcription services (e.g., http://upodn.com/) and write useful wrappers with Automator. For some languages with simple reading rules (e.g., Russian), you can use the Transliteration tool. Even if there are no appropriate rules defined, you can define your own
  • Q: Can I import external cards to my Library?
A: Yes. Your library is a .db file that is a native SQLite3 database with a single table.
You can use third-party utilities to import external dictionaries with images.
Note: All card fields, except the transcription field, are mandatory! In case of missing fields, your library may become corrupt and cause application craches
  • Q: How do I share my libraries with the community?
A: Join the TranslateIt! Teacher group
  • Q: Where do I get more knowledge bases?
A: We don't sell libraries and have no plans to develop more knowledge bases in the future. However, by popular demand, our linguists have created some additional packs: There are no images included, so, please, open preferences and disable levels 2 and 3 while using them.
  • Q: How to learn using TranslateIt! Teacher?
A: First of all, create a knowledge base and start adding words.
Even at this step, you will start learning!
Next, schedule word learning sessions or start them manually.

You may want to skip step 1, but trust us, it is essential for your learning process, maybe even more important than step 2. You need to get your mind ready for learning, that is why step 1 is so important.

Advanced Tweaks (via Terminal command line):

First of all, please, note that, to revert any settings back to their original state, type:

defaults delete ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher OptionName

When adding a new card or editing an existing one, TranslateIt! Teacher checks your library for duplicates.
To be able to force the application to add duplicates, turn the duplicate checking feature off:

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher DontCheckDuplicates -1

The default image search engine is Google. To set Yandex as your default image search engine, type:

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher ImageSearchQuery -string "http://images.yandex.ru/yandsearch?text=%@&rpt=image"

By default, TranslateIt! Teacher automatically launches TranslateIt! Dictionary (if installed). If you want to disable this behavior, type:

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher UseTIOnlyWhenRunning -1

By default, word translations are shown in TranslateIt! Dictionary's main window. You can configure TranslateIt! Teacher to show translations in a small popup window instead:
defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher UseTIDaemon -1

To Turn off the help buttons for all levels:

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher DontShowHelpButtons -1

To change the level bar's background color (RGBA 0..1 floats format):

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher BackgroundColor 0.7,0.7,0.7,1.0

To prevent TranslateIt! Teacher from using local sounds (only remote sounds will be fetched, if allowed):

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher DontUseLocalSounds -1

To prevent online sounds requests:

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher DontUseRemoteSounds -1

When you install new sounds, TranslateIt! Teacher merges them with your existing sound library skipping any duplicates. You can force TranslateIt! Teacher to replace existing sounds:

defaults write ru.DeepIT.TranslateItTeacher OverwriteSoundsOnInstall -1
